Biography:
Dr. Jorge Salazar, an expert in congenital heart surgery, has joined the UMMC faculty as an associate professor of surgery and director of the Pediatric Heart Program.

A mathematical sciences graduate of the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1990, Salazar received the M.D. from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1994. He did a general surgery residency from 1994-2000 and a cardiothoracic surgery residency from 2001-03 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md., and a congenital heart surgery fellowship from 2003-04 at the University of California, San Francisco.

He immediately joined the faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio as an assistant professor and head of congenital cardiac surgery. Salazar became founder and director of the ECLS Program at Christus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital in San Antonio, from 2004-07, before eventually becoming the hospital’s chief of congenital heart surgery. While there, he concurrently served as an assistant professor and director of congenital cardiac surgery at UTHSCSA. In 2007, Salazar joined the faculty at the Baylor College of Medicine.
